The British Red Cross are a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are. We provide a range of local community services, designed to meet the needs of vulnerable people facing personal crisis. Please contact the individual projects for a referral or more information. In Merseyside we provide the following services:

• International Tracing and Message Service (ITMS): Assisting in tracing family members separated by war, disaster or migration; delivering family news when normal means of communication have broken down by the Red Cross Messages; providing Certificate of Detention if one was visited by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in detention centres overseas.
The service is free and confidential and by appointment only. We can also provide trained interpreter volunteers.

• Refugee and Migrants Project:- Helping vulnerable asylum seekers and refugees adjust to life in a new country. We can provide one-off Emergency Support for those without financial support (assessed on an individual basis) and an Orientation service offering short-term one to one guidance and information about local services, rights and entitlements and links into local community activities. Many of our trained volunteers come from refugee backgrounds themselves and speak a range of community languages.

Emergency Response:- Helping people cope in a crisis. We train our volunteers to do extraordinary things, such as saving lives and providing support following major incidents, accidents, floods and fires. Event First Aid:- First Aid cover at public events. Accidents are a common occurrence, so when people gather for a special event, first aid assistance is a legal requirement. British Red Cross volunteers, trained and skilled in first aid practice, and can be on hand at any major event., be at a pop concert, horse race or country show. Fire and Emergency Support Service:- Help and Advice after a fire. This service meets the needs of people who have suffered damage to their home following a fire, flood or similar incident. Specially trained British Red Cross volunteers work in co-operation with the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service to provide practical and emotional support to the victims of the incident.

Humanitarian Education:- Getting young people involved. The British Red Cross work with closely with several organisations to assist with the training and development of our youth work. We encourage young people to become more active in their communities by teaching them about humanitarian values and citizenship. This includes basic first aid awareness, HIV awareness, Refugee awareness, and peer education projects amongst many others. Medical Equipment:- Providing loans of medical equipment. For many people suffering short-term injuries, medical equipment is vital if essential daily routines are to be maintained. The British Red Cross has over 400 wheelchairs, commodes, back rests and other medical items available for loan over short-term periods for a minimum donation. Skin camouflage:- Helping those with visible skin conditions. Appearance affects our daily lives and if we have to cope with a disfigurement, that can drain our confidence. We use special creams that are very effective at covering or lessening the impact of disfiguring marks or skin conditions. Contact 0151 702 5060 or e-mail liverpooldt@redcross.org.uk

Volunteering:- Volunteers are the lifeblood of the British Red Cross. They save and change lives, raise vital funds and run our shops. Without them, we simply would not be able to deliver our services, which help hundreds of thousands of people in crisis every year. Anyone can volunteer. It doesn’t matter what your skills, experience or background are, or how much time you have to give. Even if you only have a couple of hours a week to spare, we'll have something to suit you. Fundraising:- Every year, people across the UK have a great time – and raise vital money – by fundraising for the British Red Cross. Whatever inspires you, it's good to know you can make a direct difference to other people's lives simply by having fun with your friends, family or colleagues. First Aid Training:- We offer flexible, friendly and easy to follow first aid training in the workplace as well as a wide-range of courses for the public. We can also design first aid sessions specifically for your group – perhaps you and your friends would like to learn first aid for babies and children at a time and place to suit you. Other courses are available for motorists, athletes and babysitters. Charity Shops:- British Red Cross charity shops sell second-hand clothes, books, multimedia, bric-a-brac and many other items, with all profits going towards the organisation's works both overseas and in the UK. Refugee Services can offer one off clothing vouchers for these shops to service users to buy second hand clothing as an Emergency Provision. Find your local Red Cross charity shop on our website.
